For several years I & my fellow instructor Shawn Ronzio have been teaching a class called PAGE TO SCREEN @ the Douglas Education center. As part of the class, I have been writing, producing & directing. As well as my regular duties as an instructor. I also often act a a designer for creatures & characters & guide the production as an art director as well as supervising the FX. Here are some of our creations .
DEADSTAR
This space opera themed production utilized the efforts of over 60 students. With only 8 weeks of pre-production, we created 45 unique characters utilizing prosthetics, masks, fiberglass armor and foam robot suits as well as prop weapons & wardrobe. Our students also turned Shawn Ronzios shop (Standard Art Works) into a 40x60 space bar set which we used to film the entire project. Other items that were created included a 4x3 spaceship model, A 2x2 miniature space base & hand puppet creatures. Students volunteered as actors & crew & filming was provided by students from the Factory Digital Film Program as well as professional video services from Steve Kwiatkowski of Maxxteck. Post production & visual FX were provided by Dorian Cleavenger.
Beyond Shadow
This aH.P. Lovecraft themed production utilized the efforts of around 20 students with the key features being mechanical masks, chest & face prosthetics & an 8ft creature puppet. We shot mainly on the schools green screen and also created foreground & background set pieces as well as props, weapons & wardrobe. Students volunteered as actors & crew & filming was provided by students from the Factory Digital Film Program as well as professional video services from Steve Kwiatkowski of Maxxteck. Post production & visual FX were provided by Dorian Cleavenger.
LEVEL 5
This Area 51 themed production utilized the efforts of around 20 students with the key features being wearable full body gray alien creature suits & alien dummies/corpses, gas mask/helmets & body armor as well as extensive props & set pieces, prop creatures, alien fetuses, weapons, wardrobe & silicone prosthetics
. We also turned our shop/classroom into a subterranean military base complete with laboratory areas and large cryogenic chambers that characters could interact with. Students volunteered as actors & crew & filming was provided by graduates from the Factory Digital Film Program and was directed by Dorian Cleavenger. Post production & visual FX were provided by Dorian Cleavenger.
Robots vs. Monsters
This Kaiju themed production utilized the efforts of around 50 students with the key features being a full body creature suit & a full body robot suit. Students also created a miniature city environment. Students volunteered as actors & crew & filming was provided by Steve Kwiatkowski of Maxxteck. Post production & visual FX were provided by Dorian Cleavenger.
Monster Hunters
This production utilized the efforts of 2 separate semesters of students. The first group of around 60 students created unique makeups re-envisioning the classic universal monsters, as well as props & wardrobe. The second group of 12 students provided hero characters as well as props & wardrobe. Students volunteered as actors & crew & filming was provided by students from the Factory Digital Film Program as well as professional video services from Steve Kwiatkowski of Maxxteck. Post production & visual FX were provided by Dorian Cleavenger.
Halloweentown
This holiday themed production utilized the efforts of around 40 students with the key features being Halloween prosthetic makeups & masks as well as undead Santa Claus, evil elves & a mutant Easter Bunny fur suit. Students also created a miniature town set as well as wardrobe & props. Students volunteered as actors & crew & filming was provided by Steve Kwiatkowski of Maxxteck. Post production & visual FX were provided by Dorian Cleavenger.
Angels & Outlaws
This Fallout themed fan film utilized the efforts of around 40 students and graduates. Students created armor, wardrobe, set pieces, props, creature FX, and a wearable robot suit. The lead characters armor was provided by Standard Union Art Supply. This project was written & Directed by Shawn Ronzio. Video services provided by Maxxtek. Assistant direction & stunts by Paul Nanzdik. Physical FX by Jesse Lechok & Krista Montgomery. Post production by Dorian Cleavenger.
HYBRIDS
Hybrids was a collaboration between The Savini FX program and students from the George Romero film program. 40 students worked to create a full lab environment, complete with cages, props and an operating room. Students created mutant Hybrid character makeups in the style of a post apocalyptic Dr. Moreau. We also created unique props & wardrobe for each character & utilized physical effects for the action sequences.
Students volunteered as both actors and crew.
